The team rankings are determined by who is wrestling for the team and how they rank; the more ranked wrestlers a team has, the more points it will recieve and the higher it will be ranked.

A couple surprises? I know Cornel finished well last year, but number one is a surprise until you take a look at who they have on their team. Check out the rankings and let us know what you think.

What are the chances of getting a full ride scholarship if you wrestle? Check out the following image that compares the different sports and what the chances are of getting a full ride scholarship. (Click on the image to get the big picture.)

So the chances of getting a full ride scholarship if you wrestle are pretty slim. The first thing I thought when I saw that was “Why?” Answer? Money. We all know that football brings in the most money for a college or university, so they are going to want willing be able to pour more money into that sport than others. Wrestling is at the bottom of the list for the same reason. Unless you are in wrestling state, wrestling just isn’t that big of a sport.

So what are some things that everyone can do to change that? Jim Brown has a blog that is awesome. If you haven’t checked it out, you have no reason not to. He has a ton of posts about what we can do as fans to build the sport. Some that I remember reading off the top of my head are to actually going to the meets. Get butts into the seats and stands. Bring a friend. When you’re there, make noise. And lots of it. Explain to the friend that you brought the techiniques that are being used and why different points are being scored.

Some may complain that there isn’t enough coverage of the sport. While this may be true, there are plenty of places to go to check it out. Again, Jim comes to the rescue with this awesome post about getting more college wrestling coverage. If you don’t listen to the podcasts that are out there, start now. Wrestling411.tv and TakeDownRadio.com both have AWESOME podcasts and they provide amazing coverage of the sport.

Support the print magazines that talk solely about wrestling. Three of the biggest ones are WIN magazine, Amateur Wrestling News and Wrestling USA. Get one or get all three! Help support those that are covering the sport. More importantly though, make it to as many meets as possible to support the actual wrestlers.

Thanks to Mat Siltala for letting me know about this image and steelathlete.com for the actual image.

They have authors and writers coming from Buckeye Wrestling.com; InterMat, Michigan Grappler.com, RevWrestling.com, Takedown Radio, Tech-Fall, TheMat.com, The Wrestling Mall, WIN Magazine and Wrestling411, with more coming. Seriously it’s going to be sick. It’s basically a lot of links from a bunch of different websites, giving you the up to date things across the nation in News, Features, Results, Rankings, Photos, and Audio/Video, all with links pointing back to the original sites.

They will be covering live matches it sounds like it early December. They will have the Iowa vs Iowa State match, as well as the Oklahoma vs Oklahoma St. match. They will start the live coverage, though, with the the Las Vegas invitational. Should be interesting to see how they cover such a large event live!

I checked out the site at CollegeWrestlingNetwork, which is up and running. However, it seems pretty basic at the moment. They are planning, however, to make a widget so that other designers and web sites, like WrestleFattie, will be able to have that content show up easily on their pages and in their content. So keep tuned and you will soon see that widget here on our pages! Or, you might just see WrestleFattie on their pages!

Be sure to check out WIN Magazine’s new rankings. They’ve surprised a few people. First off, the not big news stuff. All three DIV I teams from Northern Iowa are in the top 25. IOU is number one and Iowa State is number 2. Northern Iowa is at No. 23.

The surpises are as follows…

At 197 lbs, the top three are 1. Craig Brester, Jr. Nebraska (2nd) 2. Dallas Herbst, Sr. Wisconsin (3rd) 3. Jake Varner, Jr. Iowa State (1st). (The second number is the place they are coming from). The Last time that Varner wasn’t placed at number one was back in Feb of 2007. Dallas Herbst beat Varner in the Midlands championships, which caused the dance around. Be sure to keep your eye on these three in the coming year!

Jake Varner, Jr. Iowa State (1st)

If you are interested in the WIN magazine at all, go ahead and get it. It’s an amazing magazine with articles written by people who not only know the sport, they eat, breath, sleep and dream about it. You can check it out the website here or you can simply order here.
WIN TOURNAMENT POWER INDEX (TPI)

The Tournament Power Index (T.P.I.) is compiled by awarding potential NCAA tournament points to each team for the ranked wrestlers they have in WIN’s current individual rankings. Teams are awarded points based on how many potential All-Americans they could have and get advancement points for wrestlers ranked No. 9-20. The order of teams in the T.P.I. can vary greatly from our dual meet rankings, as some teams have a number of highly-ranked individuals but may have holes in their dual meet line-up.

Point totals associated with individual rankings are as followed: 1st – 20 (16 AA points + 4 advancement points); 2nd – 16 (12+4); 3rd – 13.5 (10+3.5); 4th – 12. 5 (9+3.5); 5th – 10 (7+3); 6th – 9 (6+3); 7th – 6.5 (4+2.5); 8th – 5.5 (3+2.5); 9th/12th – 2; 13th/16th – 1.5; 17th-20th – 1

Fans or coaches who have questions or input on our current rankings process can e-mail W.I.N. editor Mike Finn at MikeF@WIN-magazine.com. If you wish to be included on weekly ranking release list, e-mail W.I.N. at Info@WIN-magazine.com.
