Get Them There!!

I just did a blog post that talked a little about how Olympic wrestlers are selling different things – most popular among them it seems, is t-shirts – to get to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing with their families. I just made a category on the right hand side with the different links of the wrestlers I know about that are doing this. Please check them out; buy a shirt, make a donation. If you know of any other wrestlers that are trying to get there, drop me a line and let me know their name and site; I’ll gladly throw them a link!

What Gives?

So imagine this…

Wrestling is one of the oldest and greatest sports. It was in the first Olympics in Greece. Not the modern ones started in the early 1900′s – I’m talking back in the B.C.’s. It’s been around for quite literally two millenia. That’s right – TWO; DOS! It is used not only as a game, but basic take downs, holds and combinations are used by armies around the world as a foundation for training their soldiers in hand-to-hand combat. This age old discipline has been taken and transformed into a “sport” on T.V. I actually started WrestleFattie because I was tired of looking for things on the internet for wrestling products and news and bringing up WWE crap. How did this happen? On top of that, it was the most famous of all the sports to compete in at the Ancient Games. Now look at it. It has to compete with Baseball, Basketball, Football, Track (also an original sport) Gymnastics and SO much more. On top of that, the athletes that compete in wrestling will probably not go home with multi-million dollar contracts waiting for them. Swimming great Michael Phelps is already worth more than a million dollars; Cael Sanderson gets paid around $100,000.

Don’t get me wrong; I like to watch the other sports just as much as the next guy. I actually love watching the Olympics. But what happened to wrestling? How have we let it fall? These days, the Olympic wrestlers and their families can hardly afford to make it to the games. To help raise money, their selling t-shirts. Don’t believe me? Check out this blog post about it. Some of the greatest wrestlers that we know of are SELLING T-SHIRTS TO GET TO THE OLYMPICS!! How much more insane can we get? In Jim’s words, maybe we SHOULD be having a bake sale…
