They’re free cuz they’re awesome like that. So here is one That I found on the Lehigh Wrestling Program done with by Pat Santoro. It was on the 22 of this month, so it’s not terribly old news. Kentucky School for the Blind Takes 3rd Place: Picture of the Month

The official gets a closer look as Kentucky School for the Blind wrestler Jonathon McCarty wrestles an opponent from the Indiana School for the Blind. McCarty placed second in the 119 lb. weight class at the meet. Also placing in the competition for KSB were Erik Riley, 3rd and James Lewis, 4th (125). The KSB wrestling team took third place in the meet.
Iowa Shutdowns Indiana
Just as a super quick note: earlier this week, we did put up a video of Metcalf in an interview. We said that he had 59 wins. We would like to correct that; he now has 60 straight wins.
Indiana took on Iowa Friday night. And lost. Big surprise. That makes 37 straight dual victories for Iowa and they are 7-0 in the Big Ten this season. I’m pretty sure I can call this one and say they are going to stay number one and take the NCAA title this year as well. The final score of this match was Iowa 24, Indiana 12. They opened the match at the 125 lb mark with Iowa’s Charlie Falk, ranked fifth, going up against third-ranked Angel Escobedo. Falk took it 3-1, improving his record 19-2. After the 125 came the 133 pounders. Again, Iowa took the mat with Daniel Dennis, who gained a major decision over Matt Ortega, putting the Hawks ahead 7-0 and putting up his own ninth straight win.
Metcalf was able to get a tech fall over Nick Walpole at 149, scoring 19-4. This brought the Hawkeye’s up to an 11-3 lead for the night. He is now 28-0 this season alone but has, as we’ve said before, won 60 consecutive matches.
Other wins of the night came from Ryan Morningstar, Jay Borschel, Phillip Keddy and Chad Beatty.
One on One With Brent Metcalf: Mini Interview on His Wrestling Career Past and Future
We found this new interview with Brent Metcalf on www.BigTenNetwork.com and thought we would share the joy. Gotta love Brent’s style with the hunting hoodie and the cauliflower ear!
Here is the transcript from the interview as well:
Announcer: Time now to bring in Brent Metcalf of the Iowa Hawkeyes, the number one team in the country and Brent with 59 straight matches that you have not lost, at what point does this really sink in, what you’re accomplishing right now?
Brent: I think you don’t worry about win streaks you don’t worry about records until probably the end of the season, you know after the NCAA tournament is over and really, you know in my case, I won’t worry about those things until, you know, two seasons from now when I get ready to graduate. But I think, you know, those things are on the line and you gotta be aware of it and be ready to go every time you step on the mat.
Announcer: Do you get the feel, Brent, that you’re always going to get guys best shot? That no matter what, people are pointing at the schedule and saying, “I’m gonna to be the guy that knocks him off?”
Brent: Absolutely. You know, you work hard to really create a position where you put a target on your back and you gotta be, as a competitor, you gotta love that; you gotta be aware of it and you gotta know that guys are gunnin’ for you; that there is a dot on the University of Iowa when they come to town and you gotta be ready to go.
Announcer: Up and down the line up, do you feel like if the NCAA championships were tomorrow you guys would NO DOUBT, and of course the rankings and the records reflect it, but you guys would NO DOUBT be the team to beat?
Brent: I think so. I think, you know, record wise we prove that, I think that on a daily basis we prove that but really one of the biggest things is we got a pretty tough team who rises to the occasion every single time and I think if you were to throw a situation like that at us right now we would be ready to go because the sort of competitors we have on this team and the way that they compete. So..
Announcer: Brent Metcalf, the defending Champion at 149 pounds; he has won 59 straight and his team is going to take on Iowa coming up, uh Indiana, coming up on Friday. Brent, appreciate the time!
Brent: Yup, absolutly!
Food to Avoid No Matter What… Unless of Course You Have a Death Wish
I was looking on twitter the other day and found this message waiting for me: RT @taylorbanks: foods to avoid while doing #p90x: http://bit.ly/57ZPQ. I think you are safe to say that these are foods that you should avoid at all costs, no matter what your diet and exercise regimen are. Even if you don’t have one, you should probably avoid these foods. I’ve got the RSS info below so you won’t have to leave the site to check out the content! Continue reading
Wrestling Tips and Basics: Single Leg Takedown, Cael Sanderson style
OK, so this one is NOT for the advanced wrestler. However, the take down, whatever the type of form, is still the number one way for a wrestler to attack. The old cliche phrase comes into play here: the best defense is a good offense. If you don’t have a good offense, it goes without saying that you aren’t going to score. If you don’t score, you aren’t going to win the match. So here are some basic steps to a single leg take down, thanks to Cael Sanderson.
First is the setup. Notice that the opponents head is looking down and you have control. Remember, were the hips and head go is where you are going to go. So push him around and throw him off so he doesn’t have a good defense.
Next, before you shoot, change levels. Get your hips and head under his. Notice how much of a level change Cael has done. Get down! Once you have gotten down, not before and not in the same moment, shoot in. Train yourself to shoot past the person. Be sure to keep your elbows in, almost touching. This is good defense; it makes it harder for the opponent to “cow hook” you. Reach in and grab his legs and don’t let go.Also, notice where Cael’s head is. As opposed to a double leg take down, you want your head on the inside, not the outside.
Circle around, and change levels again, this time lifting the leg up as you come.
Remember that it’s all in the hips! Get behind your opponent, circling around and keeping a TIGHT hold on the leg, getting ready to use it as leverage.
Left the leg to your hip level. Secure it and reach for your opponent’s hips and get ready to shoot THROUGH them. The next series of shots show shooting through the hips and bringing your opponentto the mat for two points.
Hope this helps!! Thanks to www.amateurwrestlingphotos.com for the pictures!
Wrestling Pictures For the Month
Hey guys, so these are from the Michigan State at Minnesota match in 2009. Thanks to Jeff Beshey for the awesome pics. Hope you enjoy!
College Wrestling Network
I was reading in WIN magazine – literally 5 seconds ago – and found a very interesting link on their site to the new CollegeWrestlingNetwork site. This looks like it’s going to be big news! They have authors and writers coming from Buckeye Wrestling.com; InterMat, Michigan Grappler.com, RevWrestling.com, Takedown Radio, Tech-Fall, TheMat.com, The Wrestling Mall, WIN Magazine and Wrestling411, with more coming. Seriously it’s going to be sick. It’s basically a lot of links from a bunch of different websites, giving you the up to date things across the nation in News, Features, Results, Rankings, Photos, and Audio/Video, all with links pointing back to the original sites.
They will be covering live matches it sounds like it early December. They will have the Iowa vs Iowa State match, as well as the Oklahoma vs Oklahoma St. match. They will start the live coverage, though, with the the Las Vegas invitational. Should be interesting to see how they cover such a large event live!
I checked out the site at CollegeWrestlingNetwork, which is up and running. However, it seems pretty basic at the moment. They are planning, however, to make a widget so that other designers and web sites, like WrestleFattie, will be able to have that content show up easily on their pages and in their content. So keep tuned and you will soon see that widget here on our pages! Or, you might just see WrestleFattie on their pages!
