Utah Valley State Open

Ok, so this was the first annual open. That means that not that many schools showed up. The ones that did were Cal Poly, Western Wyoming, Boise State and of course, UVSC. UVSC won two championships; one in the 215 lbs with Ben Kjar, who also won the Most Outstanding Wrestler at the open, and Brad Darrington won it against his teammate, Cason Elredge in the 184 lbs weight class.
It was a pretty good tournament for the size of the school. All of the wrestlers from UVSC competed unattached as did many of the others from the other schools. There was a lot of action and movement in almost all the matches, but obviously a lot to work on. Boise State dominated the tournament, taking home three first place trophies. The other schools all took home only two. Check out the video we have of Kjar wrestling Western Wyoming.
Ben Kjar is one of the top recruited athletes at UVSC. He is from Bountiful, UT and turned down colleges such as Oklahoma, Boise State, Cornell, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Arizona State just to name a few. Why? So his family could follow his wrestling career. He is majoring in Entrepreneurship at UVSC. He red-shirted in 05-07 season and now has come out with a vengeance. In high school, he created quite a trophy case I would imagine. He was a three-time national champion in 2002 in Freestyle, Greco-Roman and Folkstyle. He brought home three Utah State Championships from his sophomore year all the way through his Senior year, helping bring his high school it’s first state championship in 2002 and accumulating a record of 125-6 in that three year stretch. His sophomore year he had the perfect record of 38-0.
Check out a short little video that we have of Ben wrestling Western Wyoming.
